About Me

Hello and welcome to my Blog.

I’m a crime/mystery/thriller writer who sometimes dabbles in other genres when-ever the story dictates.

You will find my stories in anthologies, online magazines, and newsletters, as well as books

I’m published by Accent Press Ltd – having signed with them in 2014.

After many years in the International Music Business I’ve at last managed to pursue a career in writing, something I’ve wanted to do since I was very small.

About 7 years ago I decided to stop thinking about writing and get on with it.

With encouragement from my husband and a good family friend, CHRISTINA JONES, who is also the author of many Award-winning books, I took my first steps.

She read my work and to my utter surprise and delight she liked what I’d written and she has encouraged me in all that I’ve attempted since then.

So much so, that in November 2017 our co-written novel will be published by Accent Press Ltd.

It is called ONLY ONE WOMAN

Christina Jones and Jane Risdon

USA and Canadian Rights for Paperback Audio and e-Book have already been sold

I won’t spoil things by giving anything away but suffice to say this book is not in my usual genre – Crime/Mystery.

Keep an eye out for publicity about this nearer publication.

Here is a clue!

A Stab in the Dark: Cons, Dames and G-Men

in which I have a short story

Cue Murder.

The story is set in the world of Hollywood in the Golden Age of Detection, a first for me.

My inspiration came from a family member I’ve been researching – I’m a Family History fan – called Elizabeth Risdon, and her career in Hollywood which included many major movie roles.

She appeared with Lupe Velez (The Mexican Spitfire) many times and the story of Lupe Velez and her death got the little grey cells spinning.

The result being Cue Murder.

I struck lucky early on with my writing and was included in several Anthologies, along with Award-winning authors, where my short stories were well received.  You can find details of the books and stories further down.

In September 2014 after trying my luck with only 5 publishing companies I was signed by Accent Press Ltd and included in two Anthologies alongside more successful and Award Winning authors.

In December 2014 Accent Press Ltd published

Wishing On A Star

which features my short story:

Merry Christmas Everybody

Wishing on a Star

This is my second publication with the company

which is another anthology with fab 5 star reviews of my work.

My first outing with them was a challenge for me – a Ghost story for Halloween.

My first real ghost story to be honest.

Shiver (Accent Press Ltd)

was published in October 2014 and has been a great success.

It was on the Amazon Best Seller list with several 5 star reviews of my story:

The Haunting of Anne Chambers.

Shiver from Accent Press Oct 2014

I have contributed two  short stories to an anthology published in print and eBook in December 2013.

It is called In A Word: Murder

Anthology of Crime Stories

Anthology of Crime Stories

It is in aid of The Princess Alice Hospice, Farnham, Surrey and the project is the brain-child of

Mystery Author Margot Kinburg

My stories are called ‘Dreamer’ and ‘Hollywood Cover up’.

It’s available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Again my writing has been well received.

Another anthology I have contributed to

I Am Woman volume one

is in aid of the charities, Women’s Aid, Women for Women, and Breakthrough.

My short story is called The Look

This is still for sale at amazon.co.uk and amazon.com

I have had two short stories included in an anthology called Telling Tales by Writers for Welfare – this is in aid of the charity, The Norfolk Hospice, and my stories are:  The Debt Collector and The Ghost in the Privy.  Until recently this was in hardback, paperback and eBook.  However, due to various complications, it is no longer available via http://www.lulu.com.

Telling Tales Anthology featuring two of my stories: The Debt Collector and The Ghost in the Privy

Telling Tales Anthology which features two of my stories: The Debt Collector and The Ghost in the Privy.

I have had several pieces of Flash fiction and various Short stories published on Morgen Bailey’s Writing Blog http://morgenbailey.wordpress.com/

and subsequently Pod-cast by Morgen  with links to Twitter and various other social networks found on her links to these, on her Writer’s Blog.

Recently some of my short stories and Flash Fiction have been recorded.

The Secret of Willow Cottage is in two parts:

(c) Jane Risdon 2014

The Tale of the Reluctant Bride

And

The Tale of the Jilted Lover

http://bit.ly/2qGb06X

And

Changing the Guard

They’ve been recorded by Canadian Voice Over actors working for

Elijah Lucien.

I love reading and when I am not writing I can be found with my nose in a book, usually Crime, Mystery, Thriller or Espionage which I adore.

Ms Birdsong Investigates: Murder in Ampney Parva

is my first crime/thriller and is with my publisher at the moment.

It is

about a 40 something ex MI5 agent who has retired (under a cloud) to a rural village where she hopes to lose herself and anyone who might be seeking her.

Cob Web Cottage where Ms Birdsong lives in Ampney Parva

Cob Web Cottage where Ms Birdsong lives in Ampney Parva – her dream home.

Murder most foul ensues and she finds her old investigative juices flowing once more, and her talent for surveillance comes in handy as she sets out to discover ‘who dunnit, and why?  Suddenly her past comes rushing back as she bumps into someone she thought she would never see again and from whom she has been hiding.

The Vale of the White Horse - Lavinia Birdsong's home on the Berkshire/Oxfordshire Downs

The Vale of the White Horse – Lavinia Birdsong’s home on the Berkshire/Oxfordshire Downs

Ms Birdsong Investigates: Murder in Ampney Parva, the first in a series I am writing, has been completed and is with my publisher, Accent Press, awaiting their approval.

At the present I have two other Ms B books in various stages of completion:

Ms Birdsong Investigates: Murder at the Observatory

Ms Birdsong Investigates: The Safe House

Lavinia Birdsong is Miss Marple meets Mrs Peel (Avengers) for the 21st century.

She is a hard nut with a soft centre, of her era, happy using all the modern technology available to her as she sets about investigating murder and more.

She is versed in the Martial Arts and can shoot like Annie Oakley.

She’s tracked Spies, come up against ISIS (Daish) and had the hardest of criminals under surveillance including the Russian Mafia, Ukrainian Gun Runners and People Traffckers.

Because I am crazy (well, I must be) I am working on several other projects as well:

including

The White Haired Man (novel)

Chira Bazar, Mumbai - The White Haired Man Jane Risdon (c) 2014

Mumbai Guest House (c) Jane Risdon 2014

set in Mumbai and following two English men caught up in the Mumbai bombings of 2008

and how they survive having lost everything, including the means to return home.

They meet a character from the Mumbai under-world, The White Haired Man,

and are soon caught up in his world.

Their adventures find them appearing in

Bollywood movies and television shows with some of Bollywood’s biggest stars.

I have several short stories I want to get published as soon as I can knock them into shape and I am working on a

series of short stories for a book called God‘s Waiting Room.

The Ghost in the Privy (pub in Telling Tales) was one such story originally in God’s Waiting Room.

A departure from Crime, these stories are what I label ‘Gentle Humour.’

The Ghost in the Privy Featured in my series of God's Waiting Room

The Ghost in the Privy
Featured in my series of God’s Waiting Room

In addition to all this I have had a couple of stories published in on-line magazines, received lots of blogging awards (too numerous to post) and I have been honoured to be the Guest writer on many other Author’s Blogs and featured on their pages; this has been such fun, and if you want to read what I had to say do please go to my Menu and check out Taster, Blogs, and so on there.  You can also scroll down my blog-roll for links.

What with numerous short stories and two other novels in the pipeline I am a busy bee – I hope 2015/16 is the year I get these books out and into print.  I often venture away from Crime and into humour (general fiction) too…letting the story take me; whatever inspires me.

I walk a lot and take lots of photographs and these are often what I use as visual notes for my stories.  Walking, the countryside, thinking about plots, and taking photos – relaxation and fun for me, when I am not reading or writing.

Serenity (c) Jane Risdon 2013

In my previous life I was in the International Music Business working with recording artists, songwriters, producers and music publishing.  It took up every second of my life (and my family’s) for decades, and so now it is wonderful to be able to spend time writing; something I have longed to do since childhood.  I have been instrumental in the success of others and now I want to be the instrument of my own success – for me – for a change.

  1. Jane, it’s so inspiring to see another writer leave behind a life that no longer matters for a true passionate calling. Congratulations on your many books and adventures. I look forward to following your posts. 🙂

          • Jane one question and I’ll let you start your day. I notice you’ve taken classes in Forensic Science. Are your studies for your writing? If so that’s fantastic and as a writer gives you great hands on knowledge for your genre.

            • Yes I am mainly but not exclusively a crime writer and although I don’t write Police Procedurals I like to ensure my facts are accurate and up to date, even if the facts never find their way into the actual story. I know! I don’t want someone to read my work and then say…that is impossible or not right. I have studied the basics of Forensic Psychology, Forensic Science and Criminal Justice, Forensic Facial Recognition and Crime to Punishment as well as Forensic Anthropology – how to identify a skeleton found in a shallow grave without anything with them, even clothes for example. Plus basic archaeology. Heavy going but fun too.

  3. Hello Jane! I would like to commend you for having such an extensive blog and for putting so much effort into documenting many aspects of your life, including those about writing and music. I explore the latter entitled “In The Mix” and The Auditions in four parts, all of which are well written and detailed in your recall of those events and people. Strangely, commenting has not been enabled, and hence my leaving an overall comment here.

I also wonder why the Creative Frontiers blog dealing with the international music business has been discontinued. In addition, I wonder to what extent your writing articles for Creative Frontiers has shaped and/or contributed to your proficiency, aptitude and interest in writing novels.

As you can probably sense, what I have written here so far seems to be the beginning of a proper interview. Should you be interested in being interviewed, then you are very welcome to write a detailed essay or article submitted in Microsoft Word format (or something equivalent) by email to me, and I shall edit and do whatever else that is relevant before publishing it in a final form on my website in high quality.

There is no restriction in the length of the essay or article, and in the number of photos (preferably in high resolution) included.

    Here is one such example:

    • Hello and thanks so much for you kind words, I am glad you enjoy my blog. My blog for creative frontiers came a long time after my writing career began. It closed down – I don’t know why. The owner just let me know he was not running it any longer. I would love to do an interview . Thanks for asking me. I will do as you suggest but do give me a little time as I am about to begin working with my publisher on edits for a book being published in May and I am going to be busy with that. I shall endeavour to write pieces in between and then when I get chance I can send off to you. Do please remind me if I am too long about it. Once I am in editing mode life ceased to exist. LOL. Thanks again. Appreciated. Oh, am I to write about my music life or my life as an author? My books etc? Please let me know. Jane xx

      • Thank you, I’ve been busy writing short stories now I’m working on my third novel. One step at a time with me. I’ve finished two, but I wasn’t happy with them.

        • Oh I know how that is. Got three on the go too and lots of short stories and flash fiction and not enough hours. We need clones. It is hard to ignore a story just because a novel is on the go. How is it now? Have you binned them or are you reworking them?

I found you when looking for comments I might have missed and there you were. I am so sorry. I need eyes in the back f my head. I hope your give away went well and your writing too. Let me know. • Elaine, how sweet of you. I may be a while collecting it as I had a series of awards earlier in the year and was embarrassed to post them all as there was one almost weekly! Do you mind if I collect it later? I really appreciate you thinking of me and nominating me. It is wonderful that you enjoy my blog and read it. I am so happy about that too. 🙂

  36. Struck e the ‘burden’ bit might sound wrong :O I just meant that it can get daunting to have to nominate hordes of others 😉 Sorry to hear about your broken bones! 😦 It can’t be easy. I have enough trouble with just pain, let alone fractures!

      • My pleasure, Jane 🙂 No worries! It took me a fair while to handle one of them. There’d be no pleasure in them, though, if they were just a burden 😉 DO as you wish, when, and if, you can 🙂

        • Not a burden at all, just had a lot of them last year and earlier this year and they all come at once so hard to keep finding authors to pass on to who want to do it so taking a break and will look at them and begin gain asap. Have 3 novels in various stages and a short story must get done by end of month for a book…so pressure is on. Working with a broken collar bone and shoulder fractures makes the typing slow and painful…otherwise I’d be jumping around doing so much more….I am appreciative and will take up the offer asap. Thanks. 🙂
